There are many applications of wear surfaces that do not allow the presence of lubricants for function, hygienic or other reasons. Here low friction wear protective coatings offer a serious alternative. Low friction and nonstick properties are paramount. Carbon based coatings are predestined for such applications. The hardest of DLC coatings, ta-C, presents the best solution.
The performance of various DLC coatings was compared within the EU project “Oil-free powertrain”. The superior performance of Diamor® coatings for such applications was clearly demonstrated. An industrial application was tested that involved the non-lubricated running of a drilling head gearbox. A lifetime of 5 x 107 load cycles was achieved.
Additional examples of successful Diamor® applications include components for the food packaging industry (e.g. form shoulders in packaging machines), the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. pill press stamps) and the textile industry (e.g. thread guides).
