Laser, optics, measurement, and coating technology – the Light & Surfaces Group institutes combine coordinated expertise. Based on fundamental work in various fields of application, they guarantee the fast and flexible realization of customer- specific system solutions in coating technology and photonics. In cooperation with the respective local universities, the five Fraunhofer Institutes FEP, ILT, IOF, IPM, and IWS of the Fraunhofer Group for Light & Surfaces offer the entire spectrum of student training up to the doctoral level. In this way, they are not only innovation partners for technological developments but also continuously serve as a source of young scientific and technical talent. Core Competencies for Flexible Research Work The coordinated competencies ensure that research work can be quickly and flexibly adapted to the various requirements for laser production processes, beam sources, measurement technology, medicine and life sciences, materials technology, optical systems and optical production, micro-, and nanotechnologies, thin-film technol- ogy, plasma technology, electron beam technology, EUV technology, and process and system simulation. With the extensive know-how of the researchers, tailor-made laser and process-specific solutions can be realized, which include materials, product design, construction, production equip- ment and quality assurance. A wide range of industries are addressed: Automotive, biotechnology and life science, electronics and sensor technology, energy and envi- ronment, aerospace, mechanical and plant engineering, toolmaking, and optics.
